Notes
  1. 1) Your khums due date is the first day you started your job or business. If you are retired or not in employment, then you can agree a khums due date with a representative of the marja'a, or calculate separate khums years for each profit that you make, from the date you made that profit.
  2. 2) The khums of commercial commodities and real estate(s) which are intended for trading, should be paid in accordance with their current market value, even if they were bought with profits which a year has elapsed on, unless the price at which they were bought is higher than the current value.
  3. 3) If the calculations show that the amount of khums due is negative as a result of sustenance debts, then the amount of the sustenance debt equivalent to the amount of khums due for the rest of the item is calculated and excluded.
  4. 4) If sustenance debts are fully repaid in the financial year, this amount is excluded from the profits.
  5. 5) Possessions which are not subject to khums are:
    1. a. Possessions owned through inheritance:
    2. i. Cash
    3. ii. Real Estate
    4. iii. Objects that are transferrable and the like
    5. b. Possessions owned by the wife from the dowry (mahr):

Give Your Khums Through Al-Ayn

Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation have direct ijaza (written permission) from Al-Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani to receive religious dues (Khums) to spend on orphaned children. The permission includes both parts of Khums (Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada), and the exact amount of your Khums donation will go towards supporting orphaned children.

“And know that whatever of a thing you acquire, a fifth of it is for Allah, for the Messenger, for the near relative, and the orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer.”

– Quran 8:21

What is Khums?

Khums describes a Muslim’s obligation at the beginning of a new khums accounting year to pay one fifth (20%) of their annual profit or surplus income. Khums plays an important part in the Islamic economic system, in preserving economic equilibrium, and supporting charitable causes.

Khums payments are split into two equal shares:

The share of the Imam – Sahm Al-Imam: this part is spent on different charitable causes at the discretion of the jurist (marja’a).
The share of the Sayyids – Sahm Al-Sada: this part is spent on descendants of Hashim, the great grandfather of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW), who are in need.

Why is Khums important?

Due to our important services provided to orphaned children, Al-Ayn have been given authorisation (Ijaza) to handle both Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada donations. Read the official ljaza (written permission) from Al-Sayyid Ali Al-Hussaini Al-Sistani here.

How do I calculate how much Khums I need to pay?

Khums becomes obligatory at the beginning of your financial year on the profit or surplus of your income after deducting annual living expenses. If you are an employee or businessman that is the date you started your job, otherwise it is a year from the date each profit amount is made. You should consult a local scholar if you are unsure how to calculate your khums.

You can also contact us with specific queries about calculating your khums or spreading the payments over the year, and we can arrange for a scholarly response.

How do we spend Khums donations?

Khums donations received by Al-Ayn are utilised to provide essential support to orphaned children, primarily in the form of monthly financial allowances to lift them out of poverty. This applies to both Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada donations*.

If you would like your Khums donation to be spent specifically on one of our Sadaqa Jariya projects, please contact us and we can apply on your behalf for permission for that from the office of Al-Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani.

* Sahm Al-Sada is distributed to orphaned children of Hashimi lineage, defined according to jurisprudential requirements. We have an arrangement with the office of Al-Sayyed Al-Sistani to exchange any excess Sahm Al-Sada donations with Sahm Al-Imam donations to be distributed to other orphaned children.
