Khums is the financial obligation that requires Muslims to pay a fifth of their savings from the income of the year that has just ended. The payment is divided into two equal parts: the portion for the Imam [a] (Sahm al-Imam [a]) and the portion for the Hashimites who are in need of financial assistance (Sahm al-Sada).
One of the major financial obligations, as commanded by the Qur’an[1] and explained by the Ahl al-Bayt [a], is khums – the one-fifth levy. Imam Ali al-Rida [a] has been narrated to have said that the payment of khums is “the key to your sustenance and the purification from your sins.”[2]
Khums is likewise a means to support institutions and organisations, mosques, and centres of learning. It is a mechanism that supports the development of Muslim communities, whether it is in educational, social, economic, or other ways. Khums illustrates the idea of a community that is responsible for each other, whereby those with access to more lift other factions of society and help us work towards an equitable society.
Orphaned children are one faction of society that we are all collectively responsible for. Al-Sayyid Al-Sistani has provided permission for khums donations to be spent on orphaned children supported by Al-Ayn in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ghana. Khums donations received by Al-Ayn are utilised to provide essential support to orphaned children, primarily in the form of monthly financial allowances to lift them out of poverty. Khums is used for monthly financial aid to support those orphaned children who are yet to be allocated a sponsor. This applies to both Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada donations.
If you would like your khums donation to be spent specifically on one of our Sadaqa Jariya projects, please contact us and we can apply on your behalf for permission for that from the office of Al-Sayyid Al-Sistani.
